Brain tumours break most of the rules on the other pages here. They are not staged the way other cancers are, they rarely spread outside the nervous system, and "benign" does not mean harmless when something is growing inside a closed skull.

Why brain tumours are different. There is no stage I–IV for primary brain tumours.

Who is at risk. For most people, no cause is ever found. This is worth saying plainly, because the search for a reason can become its own burden; Prior radiation to the head, particularly in childhood — the one firmly established environmental risk factor; Inherited syndromes — neurofibromatosis 1 and 2, Li-Fraumeni, Turcot, von Hippel-Lindau, tuberous sclerosis. These account for a small minority.
