Cervical cancer is the one cancer in this whole programme that we could largely eliminate. Almost every case is caused by a virus we can vaccinate against, and it develops through a precancerous stage we can find and treat years before it becomes cancer.

Who is at risk. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV — present in nearly all cases. HPV infection itself is extremely common and usually clears on its own; it is persistence that matters; Never screened or under-screened — the majority of cervical cancers occur in women who were not screened, or not followed up after an abnormal result; Smoking — roughly doubles risk in women with HPV.

Finding it early. Screening is the whole story here, because early cervical cancer and precancer cause no symptoms at all.
