Esophageal cancer is one of the hardest cancers in this programme, and the reason is timing: only about one in five is caught while still confined to the oesophagus. It also has something most cancers do not — a recognisable precancerous condition, Barrett's oesophagus, that can be monitored and treated years before cancer appears.
