Two thirds of kidney cancers are now found while still confined to the kidney, where 5-year relative survival is about 93%. Most are found by accident — on a scan done for something else entirely.

Who is at risk. Smoking — roughly doubles risk, and quitting lowers it over time; Obesity and high blood pressure, both independently; Chronic kidney disease, particularly with long-term dialysis.

Finding it early. There is no screening test for the general population, and the classic triad taught in textbooks — blood in the urine, flank pain and a palpable mass — is now rare and signals advanced disease when it appears.

How it’s diagnosed. Kidney cancer is unusual: it is often diagnosed and treated without a biopsy first.

Staging explained simply. Size and whether the tumor has broken out of the kidney drive the stage.
